Here are some preparation steps- Do these BEFORE repaint work begins on the playfield.

Create full sized sample of the replacement text/insert and print on transparency stock. This can be placed over the playfield to test size and color

Color text is sampled in multiple colors to find the best match

Print out a full picture of the playfield for quick reference (you don't want the right text in the wrong place).

Create a sample board. Use the sample paints, Printed decals, solvents, and clearcoats you intend to use. You don't want unexpected interactions.

Get some of this - Decal setting solution. It melts the decal base gel so it molds itself into every nook and cranny and improves it's grip on the PF

Okay - lets put some decals on

Here's the target Insert

Printed decals

Decal trimmed before application

Put the decal in water for 10 seconds

Remove from water and place on paper towel for 1 minute

While you wait - apply a generous amount of Decal Setting solution to the insert and areas (about 1/8 to 1/4 inch beyond where the decal will go)

Gently slide the decal off the backing paper and onto the playfield - position it now using your fingers or soft paintbrush

Notice that it's not complely flat (wrinkle in upper left)

Smooth out the decal using soft paintbrush. NOTE: If you have a problem - take it off NOW - you will NOT be able to remove it later

Apply more decal setting solution - Allow to set for 3 minutes

Using a stiffer brush, work the decal into any cracks or grain. The decal will actually mold itself into the grain of the wood.

After the 3 minutes is up, gently blot the decal with a damp (not wet) paper towel

After blotting, the decal has a skin like surface - that will go away after it drys

In a couple of hours the decal is dry and looks a lot like printed ink.

Here's a sample of replaced text and an insert

Off white text. I'm lucky enough to have an old ALPS printer that prints white.

Decal over a star insert - going to try to put a coat or two of clear over the decal, then cut out the star and clear again.

After a couple more coats of clear, it shoud seal the decal to the insert.

When dry, the decal is hard to see.
